And then, not all at once, but still surprisingly rapidly, it was there. Not so much there but everywhere. It became elemental, galvanised to objects, to people. You could be watching your television or using your computer, not seeing it but being powerfully aware that it was there. People were hearing it on the radio, seeing it in shopfronts, posters on walls. Background sounds in music, the gaps between words and pictures. It was lining the street. And although people had to have had thousands of tiny silent questions in their heads the two obvious ones hung potent above them all: What could this be? Who is responsible?
